The book tells the story of a British septuagenarian whose quest to return an engagement gift from her wartime love brings her to the Long Island home of her quirky American relatives and leads to a cross-country odyssey that changes the lives of all involved. McGlynn holds an M.F.A. in screenwriting from Columbia; so far, six-figure translation deals have been struck in Italy and Germany, and rights have also gone in Brazil and Holland. * Bloomsbury Children's Books has acquired the world rights to the next YA book from Susanne Dunlap. The story is about a doomed romance for Anastasia Romanov set against the Russian revolution. Dunlap, a Musicologist, weaves early music into her novels and is the author of the adult books Emilie's Voice and Liszt's Kiss at Touchstone. Bloomsbury has just published Dunlap's debut YA effort The Musician's Daughter.
* Jossey-Bass editor Karen Murphy has acquired world rights to Jam! Run Your Business Like a Rock Star, by former lead guitarist for 38 Special Jeff Carlisi and Dan Lipson with Jay Busbee via Adam Chromy at Artists and Artisans. Carlisi and Lipson will apply principles from their team-building, rock 'n'roll fantasy corporate retreats, in which groups come together to form a rock band under the tutelage of seasoned rockers, to the workplace.
* In her first buy for Shaye Areheart Books, senior editor Sarah Knight acquired world rights to a debut novel by McCann Erickson creative director Nancy Mauro called New World Monkeys; Jamie Brenner at Artists & Artisans made the sale after submitting it to Knight on her first day at Random. Mauro's novel follows an ad exec and a Ph.D. candidate as they negotiate their failing marriage among the bizarre, vengeful residents of an upstate New York community; attempt to cover up their accidental murder of the town's mascot, a wild boar; and unearth the skeleton of a family nanny from the garden. Pub date is 2009.
* Riverhead exec editor Jake Morrissey won world rights from Adam Chromy to David Ellis Dickerson's HOUSE OF CARDS, in which the crossword puzzle designer and frequent contributor to This American Life explains how writing greeting cards at Hallmark led the former evangelical Christian to lose his religion and virginity, while discovering just how many ways there are to say “Happy Valentine's Day.”
